Configuring Taxes in California

For a general overview of Green Bits' tax settings, visit our Setting Up Taxes article. The guide below is applicable only to California markets.

1. Create an excise tax

In the Green Bits Back Office, click the gear icon in the upper right. Then, on the left menu bar, click Taxes, then Add New Tax Type:

Name the tax, select Yes for the Marijuana Only setting, and then select your applicable product types (in this case, all marijuana product types):

Scroll down to the Rate Schedule section. Enter your excise tax rate, set Inclusive to Yes, and set Calculate With Subtotal to No:

Lastly, set your Start Date as the date you need this tax to take effect (use today's date to have it take effect immediately), and leave End Date as Never. Scroll back up to the top of the page, and click Save.

2. Create a general sales tax

Name the tax, select No for the Marijuana Only setting, and then select your applicable product types, and check Exclude Patients for each product type that is tax-exempt for medical patients. In most cases, general sales tax will apply to all product types, and patients will be excluded from paying this tax marijuana product types.

Scroll down to the Rate Schedule section. Enter your sales tax rate, set Inclusive to No, and set Calculate With Subtotal to Yes:

Lastly, set your Start Date as the date you need this tax to take effect (use today's date to have it take effect immediately), and leave End Date as Never. Scroll back up to the top of the page, and click Save.
