Splitting inventory means taking a quantity from an existing Package (in Metrc states), or Lot (in Washington), and then assigning it to a new Package/Lot.
Except in limited circumstances, only split inventory in Greenbits. If you split inventory directly in your state traceability system, your inventory will be out of sync.

When should you split inventory?
You should split inventory any time you need to:
- Return inventory back to a vendor
- Transfer inventory to another retail location
- Transfer inventory to another facility for repackaging or processing into another type of product, such as an extract.
Why should you split inventory before a return or transfer?
You should always split inventory before transferring it out of your store, unless you've made no sales or adjustments on the original Package/Lot. There are important reasons for this:
Transferring part of a Package/Lot
You can only transfer an entire Package/Lot. If you want to keep part of a Package/Lot at your store and transfer the rest of it somewhere else, you first need to split it.
Even if you want to transfer an entire Package/Lot, you should still split it first.
When you transfer a Package/Lot, you also transfer the records of any sales or adjustments that you made from it. You won't have access to those records after transferring. If your store is ever audited, not having these records could result in penalties.
By splitting, you keep the original Package/Lot and its associated records, including a record of the split itself. You can then use the new, blank-slate Package/Lot for the transfer.

Splitting is also important if you accept returns from customers.
For example: imagine you transferred a Package/Lot that had sales records associated with it. A customer later comes back to return a faulty cartridge from that Package/Lot. Because the Package/Lot no longer exists in your Greenbits inventory, you can't process the return. By splitting before transferring, you can avoid this problem.
