Bulk flower that you sell by the gram is the most common type of weight-based inventory. Weight-based inventory is an item that you assigned a weight (grams, ounces, pounds, etc.) as the Unit Of Measure when you created the Product.
Green Bits recommends always selecting grams for weight-based items, since they are most often sold in grams. When you sell weight-based items, the Register prompts you to enter the total weight you are selling based on what the customer wants to purchase.
Although not applicable in all states, occasionally you may need to receive and track inventory by volume (measured in fluid ounces) instead of by weight.

Pre-rolls and cartridges are examples of unit-based inventory. Unit-based inventory is an item that you assigned units as the Unit Of Measure and assigned a weight-per-unit when you created the Product. You assign a weight for unit-based inventory so that Green Bits can enforce transaction limits. When you sell unit-based inventory, you'll scan each unit individually that the customer wants to buy.
Things to keep in mind
- Unit Of Measure can't be changed after you've created a new Product or received new inventory, though you can convert weight-based inventory into unit-based inventory.
- When you're receiving inventory and select Search for Products, only Products that have the same unit of measure will be shown. If the inventory you're trying to accept is weight-based, only weight-based Products display, and vice versa.
- Labels for unit-based items can only be printed from Back Office. Labels for weight-based items, however, can only be printed from the Register or Weigh Station at the time of sale.
