Weight-based inventory is any item where the Unit Of Measure is grams, ounces, pounds, milligrams, or kilograms. These items are priced, sold, and tracked in terms of weight. When you sell weight-based items, the Register will prompt you to enter the total weight being sold. For simplicity and consistency, Green Bits recommends keeping all weight-based inventory in grams where possible.
Unit-based inventory is any item where the Unit Of Measure is units (or "each"). These items are priced, sold, and tracked in terms of simple units, and have an assigned weight per unit. When you sell unit-based inventory there is no need to enter the weight being sold; instead, you'll ring up the number of units being sold by scanning each unit individually.
Things to keep in mind
- Unit Of Measure can't be changed after you've created a new Product or received new inventory, though you can convert weight-based inventory into unit-based inventory.
- When you're receiving inventory and select Search for Products, only Products with a compatible unit of measure will be shown. Which is to say, if the inventory you're trying to accept is weight-based, only weight-based Products will be shown, and vice versa.
- Labels for unit-based items can only be printed from Back Office. Labels for weight-based items, however, can only be printed from the Register or Weigh Station at the time of sale.
